"A ten-month old baby is at the DeVos Children’s Hospital after a severe case of lead poisoning that was discovered last week in Grand Rapids, " according to FOX-17 reporter Carl Apple. The Healthy Homes Coalition worked with Carl to get this story out, hoping to alert the community to the fact that lead poisoning is still a very real and present danger in Grand Rapids.
The CareSource Foundation recently awarded $7,500 to the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan to underwrite the cost of teaching parents how to check their homes for lead hazards. It is anticipated that more than 100 families will be able to benefit from this service.

Since 2001, the Get the Lead Out! Collaborative has reduced the incidence of childhood lead poisoning in Kent County more than 70 percent! Won't you join us in eliminating lead once and for all?
Get the Lead Out! is the Grand Rapids community's campaign to end childhood lead poisoning. The Get the Lead Out! Collaborative is facilitated by the Healthy Homes Coalition and includes nearly two dozen member organizations.
The Collaborative meets the first Wednesday of every other month to advance the work of its Strategic Plan. Standing and ad hoc committees also meet regularly. Healthy Homes encourages any and all individuals and organizations working to end childhood lead poisoning in the Grand Rapids community to participate in these meetings.
Our strategies are five: Where do you fit in?
- Children's homes are lead safe.
- The community understands the causes of childhood lead poisoning and how to protect our children.
- Community leaders make decisions that protect children from lead poisoning.
- All children 0-5 years of age are assessed for lead risk and receive appropriate testing and treatment.
- Get the Lead Out! activities are financially sustainable through 2010.
