Jane Makes A Difference at Healthy Homes

posted:

For the past few months, I have had the opportunity to be an intern at Healthy Homes Coalition, and I have been truly blessed by the experience. Being a sophomore in college, I had little to no experience working in a professional workplace. My internship has not only shown me what having a job in the business world looks like, but I have learned a significant amount about the health of a home and how to ensure it.

Knowing very little about Healthy Homes before I started working there, I was fascinated by how much I learned in such a short amount of time. I was shocked to discover how much I didn’t know about the hazards that exist in a home. For example, I knew very little about lead paint and radon and had absolutely no idea that they could cause such serious health issues. It was also interesting to go on visits with Jenn and Kyle so I could see what Healthy Homes was doing first-hand. My new knowledge of how homes can be protected from pests and dangers, such as carbon monoxide, will be something that I can use for the rest of my life.

Not only did I learn a significant amount about what Healthy Homes does in the community, but I also was able to get to know the other employees. I felt welcomed and accepted by the people at Healthy Homes Coalition.  Being a non-profit organization, the employees are there because they truly care about other people and the children of the community. I appreciated being around individuals who are empathetic and want to do everything in their power to help a family in need. Healthy Homes provided me with important experience in a real workplace, and I could not have picked a better place to receive my introduction into the professional world.
